I have lost too many hours trying to understand how serial RS232 devices works and how to make them connect together. So in the hopes that it can help you, here are a few pages I wrote about it.
These pages are written with computers and Unix (to be more specific: OpenBSD) in mind. They do not address the full RS232 specification because almost all computers and standard consumers devices have standarized on a small subset of it.
It is very likely that there is still a lots of errors in these pages, feel free correct me by email.
